External Subtitle Files

Naming Convention

Subtitle files that start with the video file's name in the same folder will show up in the subtitle list for selection. The name can also specify dot-separated labels such as language codes and kinds, which are displayed in the list and used to auto-select a track.

Anything else is shown as written, so Film (2019).en.signs.srt reads English - signs.

If a folder contains only a single video file, any subtitle files in the same folder will be displayed in the list regardless of the name.

Supported File Formats

Text subtitles as .srt, .ass, .ssa and .vtt.

.ass and .ssa files can carry their own fonts, positions and colors, which TinePlayer follows in place of your size and font settings.

Browsing For Any File

If your subtitle file is in a different location or was not discovered automatically, use the Browse... option at the end of the list to open a file browser and find it directly.

Videos Cast Or Opened by URL

TinePlayer can only look for external files beside a video it opened as a direct file path. A video opened by http:// or smb:// lists only its embedded subtitles.

Videos cast from Jellyfin will also show any external subtitle files that Jellyfin itself detected and provide.

You can still choose a separate external subtitle file with Browse....

Choices Are Remembered

The subtitle choice is stored per video, so opening a video again loads the same previously selected external subtitle file.

If a file is later moved, renamed, or becomes inaccessible, that video reverts to subtitles being off.
