Syncing an External Audio File

If an external audio file is not in sync with your video file TinePlayer can automatically measure the difference and correct for it.

Measuring the Sync

  1. On the Media Page after picking an external audio file, select Sync beneath it.
  2. Pick a reference track. This is a soundtrack embedded in the video to compare against.
  3. Wait while it samples three stretches of each track, which can take a few seconds to a minute.
  4. It will report success (or a failure) and the measurement it detected.
  5. Play the video and the correction will automatically be applied and your sound should be in sync. The correction is stored and applied anytime you pair the same file to that video.

Which Reference Track to Pick

The reference track is an embedded soundtrack that the external file is measured against. The default selection is usually fine and any track in the video should work, but a track in the same language as the external file is the best choice, especially when syncing audio description.

When Sync Fails

If the two tracks do not match with any confidence, an error is reported and no adjustment is applied.

Two reasons it can happen:

  • They are different versions of the video. A theatrical cut and an extended cut of a film cannot be synced with any single correction.
  • One runs slightly faster than the other. PAL and NTSC versions run at different rates (about 4% different). So an NTSC audio track can not be matched well with a PAL video, or vice versa.

Try a different reference track first. If it still cannot sync, you can set the delay yourself with the Sync slider while the video plays.

Syncing and Embedding an External Track With DescribeAlign

If auto-sync does not work, or you prefer to embed the external track into the video, the 16thdoc fork of DescribeAlign is a good solution. It will create a new multi-track video file with both the original audio intact and the aligned audio embedded as a second track. It will also work for the situations above where TinePlayer's auto-sync fails.

Output Device Sync Adjustment

The auto-sync adjustment is separate from the sync adjustment in the player controls which is meant to fix delay with bluetooth output devices. Both adjustments will be applied together.
